Visitors' frequently asked questions
1. What kind of music do you sing?
You can expect a wide variety of music … and lots of it. The congregation on any particular Sunday may sing old familiar hymns, gospel music, contemporary hymns, or music from around the world. The service is accompanied by a piano, which is often supplemented by guitar and the occasional other instrument.
The children of the church raise their voices regularly to share the songs they have learned in Sunday School, often teaching the adults their songs and accompanying actions.
We also have the best little choir in Ames with a very BIG sound! Whether singing the soaring, complex harmonies of traditional sacred music or the toe-tapping rhythms of gospel, these singers never cease to inspire.
2. What do you offer for children?
Whether a babe in arms or the sometimes-surly teen, each child's unique qualities are valued at Lord of Life, where we strive to create an atmosphere where children feel safe, accepted and loved.
Each Sunday’s service includes a brief children’s segment where children of all ages are invited to gather and hear a message especially prepared for them. Many families choose to have their children, even babies, with them during the service. Sure, a nursery is available on request, but a little joyful noise in the sanctuary is OK by us.
Singing, stories, skits, games, crafts and other activities offer a lively education for preschool and elementary children in Sunday School throughout the school year. Vacation Bible School mid-summer brings more fun and learning in a week of special evenings. A youth program provides lots of opportunities for fun and wholesome activities for the congregation’s youth, visitors, and friends.
Just about anything you want! “Dressing” for church is not a requirement! If you are comfortable wearing a suit or a dress, go right ahead. But if you are more comfortable wearing a T-shirt and shorts, or jeans and boots that’s OK, too. You will find most worshippers wearing what is loosely described as “business casual” attire, but our focus is on faith, not fashion.
4. What are your main beliefs?
Lord of Life is a Lutheran congregation. We believe that we are not saved by what we have done in the past or do now. We are saved by the grace and love of God. Because God has come to us and shown us love and forgiveness, we then respond with acts of worship and service.
5. Will I be asked to give money?
Sure, an offering plate will be passed. After all, churches must pay utilities, employ a pastor, and have a place to meet. But whether you want to pass the plate on by or pause to drop in something is strictly up to you. Regular church activities such as Sunday School and Vacation Bible School are always free at Lord of Life.
Lord of Life worships at the University Lutheran Center, which is located at 2126 Gable Lane in Ames. That's one block south and one block east of the ISU Memorial Union parking ramp.
